Time and position relations
This is going to be a real mess, so you can get in the mood.
When I was young, I often had to deal with positional relationships, and worse, so did others. From two straight lines in space („Two airplanes in the sky, what is the shortest distance between them at different speeds“) to positional relationships between straight lines and airplanes („Where is the landing point of an airplane if the runway is totally crooked“, okay, nonsense, but it’s just math), that kind of thing. Analytical geometry, vector calculus, if you want to send shivers down your spine. Time relations don’t exist in math, maybe because they still give me more trouble.
„Too much local situation“
When you teach, you usually have to deal with 25 to 30 young people in a room, which is very nice and I always enjoyed it, well, sometimes they were annoying, especially when they weren’t there, but those were exceptions. During the break there were 15 people in the small staff room and 40 or more in the big one. You didn’t get lonely there, but you could go outside to smoke alone. And when I did that for eight hours a day, with changing topics and more than 100 or 120 different students, I was exhausted and tired by 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and I needed coffee, cigarettes, quiet music, and just two hours of peace and quiet, no conversations, nothing. If you have stacks of exams to correct grinning at you during that break, it doesn’t make things any more relaxed. No, it’s not about complaining, it’s the best job in the world.
I felt the same way again yesterday at the demonstration against the right. Walking through the city for two and a half hours with the best wife I’ve ever had and a four-legged friend is exhausting. There are always people moving in the same direction and you’re right in the middle of it. It may not be understandable, but after 30 minutes I have to take the dog out onto the sidewalk and take a deep breath, too much local situation, so to speak. After 10 minutes I’m off again for another half hour. It’s human nature to always keep an escape route open.
And the demo tourists, great, but I understand them very well. I used to sit in a café and watch a demonstration to see if I recognized anyone. Today I’m annoyed by others, it’s like „see and be seen“ again, but without being there, very amusing. There were also signs saying „Kill Nazis“ and „The CDU is our enemy“ and even „Form gangs“, as you know. But what is nice is the huge majority with „Education helps“ or „Human rights instead of right-wingers“. That might be hard to understand in English.
And when I walk, my wife always has to walk on my right, I don’t know any other way and I don’t want to change. I always walk the dog to my left. He often wants to walk in the middle. Questions of location are not unimportant for dogs either. If someone wants to walk to my left and talk to me, we have to do it standing up. I can only speak to my right and hear to my right. The ears are still great, there seems to be another disorder. This is not meant to be political in any way, for God’s sake! I just want the other person to be able to turn to the left.
„Too long in terms of time“
I have problems with a five-hour tennis match. Even though it’s supposed to be exciting, it’s just too long for me to have a result at the end that makes me happy or disappointed. Great feelings do not depend on how long an event lasts. Time elapsed and positive feelings are not proportional to each other, to put it in numerical language. In a very short time, you can even induce extremely negative feelings, which are then anti-proportional. The fact that time and positive feelings are not proportional to each other also applies to private meetings and gatherings. Sure, in the case of an invitation to coffee and cake, it might just be a great afternoon that surprisingly doesn’t end until 10 pm. It doesn’t matter if it’s at our house or somewhere else. Normally, a meeting with coffee, tea and cake in a private setting takes place between 3pm and 6:30pm. For me, it’s a huge, expensive, wide window with sliding doors that looks out onto the terrace of a villa in Santa Monica, California.
To put it straight: Apart from spontaneous deviations, invitations to coffee and cake have a time frame that should not exceed three hours. After two and a half hours I’m already getting a bit restless, the dog is getting annoyed because he doesn’t get enough attention, the bumblebees in my long back are buzzing audibly. No, I don’t ask guests to leave, ever. Even if we are invited, I want to leave after 3 hours at the latest, because I think that at some point you become a nuisance if you don’t leave. But there are cases here where coffee and cake go on until 9pm, in which case the host has to have a soup or something hearty up his sleeve as a „tail“ beforehand. You don’t have to. Am I going to introduce something like „I have to be home at 6:30 for the sports show“? Others like to do that, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but it’s not for me. The sports show is also too long. Maybe I’m becoming a bit obsessive, which can be useful in some cases. Any other suggestions?
2.5 hours is nice and it’s long enough, then you’re happy to see each other again a week or two later. That’s fine. But if the „match“ lasts 5 to 6 hours, I don’t want to repeat it every week, avete capito?
Finally, a definitive answer to the question of punctuality: being too early is also being unpunctual, it never works. It’s better to be 5 or 10 minutes late, which saves the host from having to rush. Guests should also not be in a hurry when it comes to 3 minutes. No host waits at the Hillary Step of Mount Everest, they sit in a chair and look at a clock in the kitchen, so 5 minutes late is not a disaster. In fact, I recommend it.
Oh, that reminds me of a friend of mine who never wanted to be late, so he was always early. He always planned a flat tire for the trip to Hamburg, so at least 120 minutes. It takes about 50 minutes. If he didn’t have a flat, he was still way too early – 70 minutes. You go to a cafe and read a newspaper, you don’t come earlier than you agreed. You don’t call to see if you can come earlier. „You“, but that’s just me.
Once I was a minute late when we were supposed to go for a bike ride, I could already see him standing by the bike, but I already had a WhatsApp message telling me when I was coming. Crazy, right? I would wait 15 minutes and then ask, not before. I’ll leave out the „arrived two days early“ thing, although that’s funny as long as it doesn’t affect you. Oh, good, I’d forgotten all that.
A small addition to the situation relations, now in the vertical problem area: I haven’t eaten a so-called burger yet, I’ve bitten into one twice, in 2003 on the way to Denmark and in 2023 in the center of Munich. I don’t understand why they can’t just put them all together side by side on one plate. A knife and fork would be nice.
