TV Today

TV Today

For those who don’t know: TV-Today is a magazine for television. Always with those heavily edited pictures of women they wouldn’t recognize themselves in. Yes, we still watch TV sometimes, quite normally. The program is usually bad, my wife sometimes turns it on for fun and clicks through. Sometimes she gets stuck somewhere, but quickly turns it off. I can’t keep up with the clicking myself, and I don’t watch movies that are interrupted by commercials. It takes away some of the flow and excitement. It’s not for nothing that movies have commercials before they start, not in the middle. We also don’t stop every 15 minutes on the way to the North Sea dike to take a break. You can overdo it.

In any case, we’ve had a subscription to this magazine for many years. HörZu used to be much better, of course, if only because of the search images in old works of art „Original and Fake“ that I mentioned earlier, around 2016. But it only contained the program for one week and still cost a lot more. TV-Today initially cost €1 or €1.50 per issue with the program for two weeks. I don’t dare look at the cover, but I think the price is higher now. I don’t usually cancel a subscription, I find it hard to get used to a different layout. But if they change it at TV-Today, I might consider it. Nobody wants supermarkets to be redesigned, right?

A very long time ago, Germany had just won the World Cup, the best wife I’ve ever had says it was recently, I once accidentally threw the latest issue of TV-Today in the trash instead of the expired old one. I’m told this has happened three or four times in the last year. Each time my wife says I wasn’t paying attention. Then I go through the paper trash, even outside in the big trash can, find nothing, and still feel guilty. I tend to do that, I made the same mistake when Mertesacker was still playing, the one with the ice cream bin, you know. „Big f**kin‘ German“ was his name at Arsenal. Well, that was a very, very long time ago, 10 years or so.

Well, to come to the end: Shortly after Christmas the issue of TV-Today was missing again, which of course caused a nasty look from my wife. She often doesn’t need words to say much. Three days before the magazine expired, i.e. when there were still three days of programming to look up, it was in the mailbox. Much too late! That’s not possible. So I called the TV-Today service and asked them to change the delivery service. I wanted the magazine to be delivered by a yellow car instead of a blue bicycle.

It works great, since then I always get two issues, one without foil from the blue ones, one with foil from the yellow ones.

Blue and yellow! You should think about Ukraine more often. It’s no further away than Italy. Rome and Kiev are just as far from here, except for a few kilometers: 1650km.

TV-Today

TV-Today

Witches used to have brooms, now they drive Opels.

Witches used to have brooms, now they drive Opels.

That’s what was written on the back window of an Opel today as I drove to Edeka as usual to complete my wheat roll ritual. Oh, I shouldn’t have told the two sisters my story, now our morning conversation has gone completely off the rails. „Two wheat rolls and a large grain roll, please. „Yes, sure, something lighter as usual, I’ll look for it,“ she says before I can ask for it. Because of the extra grain roll for €1.45, the other one in the back asks, „Oh, not the usual order today?“ And then they smile at me, as if they really enjoy interrupting my established routine, which is very difficult now. The melody too, all gone. „You’ve never needed a receipt before, until next tiiiiime!“.

But that saying reminded me of the good old days. My father had a light blue Opel Kadett LS Coupe from 1968, a dream with 45 hp. With 60000km on the clock, it was sold in 1978, it had a rust spot on the fender. There were several coupe versions of the Kadett, the one on the photo, the one I mean, the most beautiful and most American of all. A crazy number of variations. The blue in the photo is a bit faded after 56 years, it was a very bright light blue. Then came a Rekord in metallic green with 100 hp, a 2.0S, so with the carburetor engine, it ran well, my old father soon stopped driving, I had to do it because my mother couldn’t. As a passenger she could do everything, really everything. Then I put an original „E“ from the injection engine behind the „S“, which made it a little faster on the highway, and that was the only tuning of my life. As I like to say: You can’t go from the Black Forest to the Baltic Sea today in 6 hours with 100 hp. We bought red overalls and looked like a Ferrari service crew, but it was an Opel. At a gas station we were asked to clean the windshield of another car, nice try. I’ve told you this before, but you don’t remember anyway.

I always remember Opel, they used to sell more cars than Volkswagen, but then they started making Golfs and hit back with a 7 iron. I had a very nice colleague who was very sporty, very funny, very fair, very demanding, very competent, so he was almost like me. He flipped out when someone called his new Opel „Astra“ a Opel „Kadett“, he didn’t like that. A „Kadett“ is an old model from the 60s, you know? But in an A-level exam, he once answered the question „Can I sit here?“ to a student who was visibly nervous when she came into the cold exam room „This is where we ask the questions“. Sure, I had to bite my pencil, but the student was not amused. From that day on, I called his „Astra“ just „Kadett“.

„Your Kadett is far away today!“

„Are you going on vacation by train or with your Kadett?“

It was just for her.

„Dein Kadett steht weit weg heute!“

Time and position relations

Time and position relations

This is going to be a real mess, so you can get in the mood.

When I was young, I often had to deal with positional relationships, and worse, so did others. From two straight lines in space („Two airplanes in the sky, what is the shortest distance between them at different speeds“) to positional relationships between straight lines and airplanes („Where is the landing point of an airplane if the runway is totally crooked“, okay, nonsense, but it’s just math), that kind of thing. Analytical geometry, vector calculus, if you want to send shivers down your spine. Time relations don’t exist in math, maybe because they still give me more trouble.

„Too much local situation“

When you teach, you usually have to deal with 25 to 30 young people in a room, which is very nice and I always enjoyed it, well, sometimes they were annoying, especially when they weren’t there, but those were exceptions. During the break there were 15 people in the small staff room and 40 or more in the big one. You didn’t get lonely there, but you could go outside to smoke alone. And when I did that for eight hours a day, with changing topics and more than 100 or 120 different students, I was exhausted and tired by 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and I needed coffee, cigarettes, quiet music, and just two hours of peace and quiet, no conversations, nothing. If you have stacks of exams to correct grinning at you during that break, it doesn’t make things any more relaxed. No, it’s not about complaining, it’s the best job in the world.

I felt the same way again yesterday at the demonstration against the right. Walking through the city for two and a half hours with the best wife I’ve ever had and a four-legged friend is exhausting. There are always people moving in the same direction and you’re right in the middle of it. It may not be understandable, but after 30 minutes I have to take the dog out onto the sidewalk and take a deep breath, too much local situation, so to speak. After 10 minutes I’m off again for another half hour. It’s human nature to always keep an escape route open.

And the demo tourists, great, but I understand them very well. I used to sit in a café and watch a demonstration to see if I recognized anyone. Today I’m annoyed by others, it’s like „see and be seen“ again, but without being there, very amusing. There were also signs saying „Kill Nazis“ and „The CDU is our enemy“ and even „Form gangs“, as you know. But what is nice is the huge majority with „Education helps“ or „Human rights instead of right-wingers“. That might be hard to understand in English.

And when I walk, my wife always has to walk on my right, I don’t know any other way and I don’t want to change. I always walk the dog to my left. He often wants to walk in the middle. Questions of location are not unimportant for dogs either. If someone wants to walk to my left and talk to me, we have to do it standing up. I can only speak to my right and hear to my right. The ears are still great, there seems to be another disorder. This is not meant to be political in any way, for God’s sake! I just want the other person to be able to turn to the left.

„Too long in terms of time“

I have problems with a five-hour tennis match. Even though it’s supposed to be exciting, it’s just too long for me to have a result at the end that makes me happy or disappointed. Great feelings do not depend on how long an event lasts. Time elapsed and positive feelings are not proportional to each other, to put it in numerical language. In a very short time, you can even induce extremely negative feelings, which are then anti-proportional. The fact that time and positive feelings are not proportional to each other also applies to private meetings and gatherings. Sure, in the case of an invitation to coffee and cake, it might just be a great afternoon that surprisingly doesn’t end until 10 pm. It doesn’t matter if it’s at our house or somewhere else. Normally, a meeting with coffee, tea and cake in a private setting takes place between 3pm and 6:30pm. For me, it’s a huge, expensive, wide window with sliding doors that looks out onto the terrace of a villa in Santa Monica, California.

To put it straight: Apart from spontaneous deviations, invitations to coffee and cake have a time frame that should not exceed three hours.  After two and a half hours I’m already getting a bit restless, the dog is getting annoyed because he doesn’t get enough attention, the bumblebees in my long back are buzzing audibly. No, I don’t ask guests to leave, ever. Even if we are invited, I want to leave after 3 hours at the latest, because I think that at some point you become a nuisance if you don’t leave. But there are cases here where coffee and cake go on until 9pm, in which case the host has to have a soup or something hearty up his sleeve as a „tail“ beforehand. You don’t have to. Am I going to introduce something like „I have to be home at 6:30 for the sports show“? Others like to do that, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but it’s not for me. The sports show is also too long. Maybe I’m becoming a bit obsessive, which can be useful in some cases. Any other suggestions?

2.5 hours is nice and it’s long enough, then you’re happy to see each other again a week or two later. That’s fine. But if the „match“ lasts 5 to 6 hours, I don’t want to repeat it every week, avete capito?

Finally, a definitive answer to the question of punctuality: being too early is also being unpunctual, it never works. It’s better to be 5 or 10 minutes late, which saves the host from having to rush. Guests should also not be in a hurry when it comes to 3 minutes. No host waits at the Hillary Step of Mount Everest, they sit in a chair and look at a clock in the kitchen, so 5 minutes late is not a disaster. In fact, I recommend it.

Oh, that reminds me of a friend of mine who never wanted to be late, so he was always early. He always planned a flat tire for the trip to Hamburg, so at least 120 minutes. It takes about 50 minutes. If he didn’t have a flat, he was still way too early – 70 minutes. You go to a cafe and read a newspaper, you don’t come earlier than you agreed. You don’t call to see if you can come earlier. „You“, but that’s just me.

Once I was a minute late when we were supposed to go for a bike ride, I could already see him standing by the bike, but I already had a WhatsApp message telling me when I was coming. Crazy, right? I would wait 15 minutes and then ask, not before. I’ll leave out the „arrived two days early“ thing, although that’s funny as long as it doesn’t affect you. Oh, good, I’d forgotten all that.

A small addition to the situation relations, now in the vertical problem area: I haven’t eaten a so-called burger yet, I’ve bitten into one twice, in 2003 on the way to Denmark and in 2023 in the center of Munich. I don’t understand why they can’t just put them all together side by side on one plate. A knife and fork would be nice.

Man braucht ca 50 Minuten.

Irre, was?

Children in the river

Children in the river

Some children are bathing in the river that flows through a small village. They are not very old and they are bathing naked. An old lady calls the police to complain. The police come to the old lady and ask her to describe the situation. Together, the lady and the policeman go to the window of the lady’s apartment:

„Look, there they are! They’re bathing …. naked!“

„Yes,“ says the policeman to the nice lady, „that’s not how it works, if that bothers you. Don’t worry, I’ll talk to the kids.“

„Oh, that’s nice of you to do that, Mr. Constable. Thank you very much!“

The policeman leaves, smiles a little, he is a father himself, and goes to the river. There he found the children, who had already seen him coming and were getting dressed. Smiling, he approaches the children:

„It’s okay, it’s okay. Guess what? There’s an old woman back there who’s embarrassed to see you bathing naked. That didn’t used to be the case. Why don’t you go a little further up the river where you can bathe in peace and she won’t see you?“

A few days later, the old woman calls the police again, her voice breaking.

„They’re doing it again! Naked! In the river!“

The policeman gets on his patrol bike and rides to the old woman’s house again. She opens the door for him, her face already red. They go back to the window and she points. The policeman makes an effort, but he says, „I can’t see anything, where are the children bathing naked?“

„Over there, naked! I can see them clearly with my spyglass!“

_

I already asked ChatGBT, but she doesn’t know the story, I thought it was by Paul Watzlawick, but I can’t find any reference to it. It might be from „The Situation Is Hopeless, But Not Serious: The Pursuit of Unhappiness“ or so I thought. Anyway, I’ve had the story in my head for 40 years or more. Some stories do that and don’t ask if they can stay a while longer. This is also true of stories from my own life.

And what is this little story about? Maybe the knowledge that something unauthorized is happening. It’s not about seeing it in front of our eyes. It’s about the fact that the mere knowledge that it’s happening worries us. Even if it’s so far away that we need a spyglass to see it.

I think it’s nice that especially the policeman is generous with the law and treats the children lovingly. He doesn’t take the law too seriously, at least not in this little story.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m a policeman like that, or if I’m more often a very, very old woman with a spyglass.

„Alles gut, alles gut. Wisst ihr was?

I like to take out the paper trash

I like to take out the paper trash

Yes, it's hard to be honest.

Take the paper trash can, for example.

My wife has often reminded me to put it out when the others have done it. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to do it, and then there's trouble, and I take the trash can to the paper waste bin to be reloaded. That's not so bad either, I smoke a cigarette next to the trash can and then suck on two Fisherman's so I don't get the next complaint.

As for the paper trash can, yes, I have a bad temper. I've also misplaced this list of appointments. My wife can't know that, that ... well, it's not going well for me.

I now just leave the full paper trash can so by the side of the road when I feel like they're coming. It's funny, because an hour later, half the street is full of paper trash cans. Even without an appointment.

Herd instinct. 🙂

But then I roll ours back in front of the garage. Just for fun, of course.

My wife says shortly after:

"Please put the paper trash can out."

I find this fascinating, but ... admittedly a bit mean of me.

Same thing at Lidl.

Of course I keep an eye on my wife to see if she does something wrong, not out of malice, but just to catch her out. I have to be very careful because she has strict rules and rarely breaks them. It's a shame, really, but it can't be helped 🙂 .

This week was a good one: we went to Lidl together.

She wanted to buy grapes and she tried two small grapes in the supermarket and thought they were good, so I was allowed to take a big grape in my shopping cart.

Then I got a bag of cookies for €0.79, those American ones with the big chocolate pieces, they taste really good with coffee.

When she was looking for the cheese ... I always have to push the cart ... always behind her ... like Prince Philip behind Elisabeth ... so when she was at the cheese, I ate one of the cookies, then another. I was kind of hungry. And they're really good, especially for the price.

She saw the open box of cookies and confronted me:

"You can't do that, you have to pay for them first."

(... I'll take the third cookie now, of course.)

Me: "Why, I'm paying for the bag, I'm putting it on the conveyor belt."

She: "No, that's illegal, you can't do that."

Me: "But you, you took the two grapes before ....."

(... can't finish the sentence)

You: "That's something completely different: I just tasted them."

Me: "But I pay for what I eat, you stole it. Or do you also weigh yourself on the scales at the checkout??"

She: "Nonsense. Please take your cookies out, but pay for them first, I'm embarrassed."

Difficult. It's just difficult. But you have fun. :-))

Are you allowed to try bananas?

One morning, one Franz, one problem

One morning, one Franz, one problem

Oh yes, another Sunday has passed. As I mentioned recently, Sundays are always a little different from the usual weekdays. A Sunday also needs its fixed routines, something different from the usual weekdays, but Sundays shouldn’t be too variable either.

Since the children have left home, my wife is a „single parent“. The saying comes from a former friend, very funny. What’s less funny is that he became friends with Wagenknecht’s theories on vaccination in the Corona era and generally had an anti-American attitude. The Russians had been betrayed, they felt threatened by NATO, well, you know what they say. Or was he just a child of the 60s? It was quite amusing for a while, but at some point you can’t listen to it anymore. At some point I called it „unbearable“ and since then only the „single parent“ joke has stuck with me. As I’ve mentioned before, at some point the channel is full for me, the pressure is mounting, and then I can only quote:

„I’ll let him out the back.“
(Franz Beckenbauer, when asked how he deals with pressure as a coach)

So on a Sunday morning I get up, go to the bathroom, make breakfast, walk the dog, get the rolls. I do this by car, it’s very windy here and it’s always raining. Then my wife, the best wife I’ve ever had, gets to sleep in. Without my wife there wouldn’t be a single car on the road in Germany. A bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture. Yesterday I even drove to the „Boy“ bakery, which is a bit further away, but my wife likes the rolls from there best, especially on Sundays. When they open a new store, and they do it all the time, they always say „It’s going to be a boy!“ during the renovation. I don’t like to go there because there are so many men working there. In principle I don’t have anything against men, for example at soccer or handball, with a beer or a game, it’s all good. But I prefer rolls made by women. Men and meat, okay, men and rolls, that just doesn’t work for me.

So I take two light ones for myself, two for my wife, one with a dark nutty taste, one with spelt. And then there is a roll with cinnamon, Hamburg style. That’s too much for two. Then I go back, make the tea, put it on the kettle, yes, and then I read the newspaper on the tablet. Even the ads, all the ads. You start doing that when you’re 60, I don’t know why.

These French rolls, the dough is spread with a lot of butter, then there’s a lot of sugar with a lot of cinnamon on top, then it’s rolled and cut into slices. Anyway, they swell up and then take a diamond shape when they are baked. The liquid sugar with the cinnamon oozes out a little to the right and left, which then crumbles nicely, so the two ends are sugary crispy and browner than the rest. I prefer the middle, which is very soft and light on the outside. I don’t just like the middle layer in French rolls. My ex-boyfriend would only eat the left corner. I find that just as impractical as eating only the right side, because you never get the whole picture of the roll or the world. It’s like the wingers in the old days, Abramczik, he only knew the outer line up to the corner flag, the rest was foreign to him. Ball, run, cross to Fischer, very simple. But soccer isn’t always that simple, just like politics or a French roll.

Yes, I’m still sitting here because my wife needs some time in the bathroom, especially on Sundays. Fingernails, hair, it just takes time.

At some point I’m sitting in the kitchen, facing the stairs that lead half a floor up to the living room, Norah Jones is singing, then she floats in like an angel from heaven, striding down the stairs, her hair blowing in the breeze, just like 30 years ago, she smiles at me, gives me a kiss, then the dog, then she sits down, smiling. I fill her cup with hot green tea, vanilla-peach. I’ve already cut open the dark buns.

„What is this? You’ve broken off both ends of the rolls and eaten them! That’s not possible! That’s the best part! Man, yo, great Sunday!“

„I’m thinking of Confucius, who said: Sum up the worries of the day in half an hour and take a nap in that time. (Franz Beckenbauer)
